CHAPTER TWELVE

They worked into the night, talking some, not talking a lot. But getting to know more about this house and each other.

Around midnight, Santo’s cell rang.

“Hello, Rikki.”

He winked at Davina while he assured his sister that he was okay. “I’m with Davina at the other house. We’re taking the first step. Demo.”

Davina hid a smile, a sense of accomplishment and relief washing over her. After he’d kissed her, and after she’d recovered from the shock of need that had jolted through her at that kiss, she’d explained “demo” to him while his gaze had moved over her with a new awareness, while her heart had beat itself into that new awareness. Then they’d worked in silence, taking little breaks to discuss their plan for the house.

His plan.

Davina had to remind herself that this was Santo’s home, not hers.

No. His plan.

God’s plan, of course. This was out of her hands. She had to turn the future over to God and if that mean walking away, then she’d have to do that.

But when she heard Santo’s soft tone, she prayed God would give her a sign, too. Glad that he’d calmed down, she knew nothing had been solved. He still needed to find a way out of his grief and pain and his children needed some sort of understanding of things.

He ended the call and looked at his watch. “I think we’ve done enough for tonight.”

Had reality kicked in on him? Made him see he still didn’t want to be here after all?

Davina ignored the disappointment of that possibility. “Is Rikki still at your house?”

“No. They left the children asleep and Mrs. Brownlee snoozing in a recliner. My sister was just worried about me. But when I told her I was with you, she seemed relieved.”

That spoke volumes, Davina thought. Rikki’s trust in her meant a lot to her. But she needed to process all that had happened today. “It is late and my muscles are screaming.”

“How did you get here?” he asked. “I didn’t see your truck.”

“I walked,” she said. “Never considered I’d have to also walk back this late at night.”

“Nonsense, I’ll give you a ride.”

She brushed her hands off and then looked at her dirty clothes. “I’m a mess.”

He tugged her close, his hand around her waist. “You look beautiful.”

Davina smiled up at him and distanced herself from that attractive and rare happy look on his face. “Okay, we got a lot accomplished. Tomorrow we rest and then Monday morning my crew and I will get started on the big stuff.” Pointing to the sturdy load-bearing column she’d left in place after they’d taken out the wall, she said, “We have to put up a support beam to make sure this open area is secure and once that’s done I can take this column out. Then new drywall, updated fireplaces, all new doors and windows to hurricane-strength code.”

Santo put a finger to her lips. “Stop. I’m so tired and you are making me even more tired. Let’s go.
