CHAPTER TWELVE
They worked into the night, talking some, not talking a lot. But getting to know more about this house and each other.
Around midnight, Santoâs cell rang.
âHello, Rikki.â
He winked at Davina while he assured his sister that he was okay. âIâm with Davina at the other house. Weâre taking the first step. Demo.â
Davina hid a smile, a sense of accomplishment and relief washing over her. After heâd kissed her, and after sheâd recovered from the shock of need that had jolted through her at that kiss, sheâd explained âdemoâ to him while his gaze had moved over her with a new awareness, while her heart had beat itself into that new awareness. Then theyâd worked in silence, taking little breaks to discuss their plan for the house.
His plan.
Davina had to remind herself that this was Santoâs home, not hers.
No. His plan.
Godâs plan, of course. This was out of her hands. She had to turn the future over to God and if that mean walking away, then sheâd have to do that.
But when she heard Santoâs soft tone, she prayed God would give her a sign, too. Glad that heâd calmed down, she knew nothing had been solved. He still needed to find a way out of his grief and pain and his children needed some sort of understanding of things.
He ended the call and looked at his watch. âI think weâve done enough for tonight.â
Had reality kicked in on him? Made him see he still didnât want to be here after all?
Davina ignored the disappointment of that possibility. âIs Rikki still at your house?â
âNo. They left the children asleep and Mrs. Brownlee snoozing in a recliner. My sister was just worried about me. But when I told her I was with you, she seemed relieved.â
That spoke volumes, Davina thought. Rikkiâs trust in her meant a lot to her. But she needed to process all that had happened today. âIt is late and my muscles are screaming.â
âHow did you get here?â he asked. âI didnât see your truck.â
âI walked,â she said. âNever considered Iâd have to also walk back this late at night.â
âNonsense, Iâll give you a ride.â
She brushed her hands off and then looked at her dirty clothes. âIâm a mess.â
He tugged her close, his hand around her waist. âYou look beautiful.â
Davina smiled up at him and distanced herself from that attractive and rare happy look on his face. âOkay, we got a lot accomplished. Tomorrow we rest and then Monday morning my crew and I will get started on the big stuff.â Pointing to the sturdy load-bearing column sheâd left in place after theyâd taken out the wall, she said, âWe have to put up a support beam to make sure this open area is secure and once thatâs done I can take this column out. Then new drywall, updated fireplaces, all new doors and windows to hurricane-strength code.â
Santo put a finger to her lips. âStop. Iâm so tired and you are making me even more tired. Letâs go.
